Taking trips via Tour Operators

Expensive, but you generally know what you are getting, so no surprises BUT often that detracts from the enjoyment

Most of the hotels have a room or area where the tour operators have their trip books with pictures and descriptions of the trips available.

They provide trips on a per person basis.

These are generally run on a group basis, of 10 to 20 participants being picked up from a variety of hotels by coach or safari lorry, for a trip to one of the popular destinations around the Gambia.

These trips have a fixed and inflexible itinery, but are very well suited to many hotel guests who want to fit in with the hotel catering regime or like being in a medium to large size group of tourists all doing the same thing.

These trips tend to be arranged happenings, not spontanoeus events

Most charge for the trip in advance, some even try to sell these trips on the coach from the airport with tempting discounts - CAUGHT before you have even arrived!!

BECAUSE prices are generally per person, family trips can be quite expensive.
If trips are not filled with enough people to make up the minimum numbers, they get cancelled.

Half day trips cost around £50 per person - full days are around £80 to £100 pp. There is seldom room for negotiation over the prices.

You are paying a high price to be sure you are not cheated - but beware the stalls and booths you visit, know you are with the tour ops and will charge you higher prices accordingly.

So HEADS you loose and TAILS you loose as well - BUT the tour ops do among the best of the organised trips in a very sanitised way, they have been known to engineer some rather distasteful camera oportunities throwing bags of sweets around the transports, you are unlikely to have close encounters with the real local people.
