Trips Out - Doing your own thing

There is nothing quite like going it alone and when it works out it has to be a great experience - but only for the really experienced traveller, who knows the ropes.

This is fine in and around the close vicinity of your hotel, but many visitors like to just take off from their hotel and do their own thing, meet their own local people and take it from there.

Although we encourage people to get out of their hotels, we do strongly suggest that you have a local escort at least for your first holiday in Gambia and until you know the ropes

Of course it seems cheaper to do your own thing unhelped, but it often costs you much more in the long run.

Un aided tourists are easily spotted by the conmen that are about round the hotels and there are numerous scams over transport, food, drinks, money exchange, entrance fees, tourist souviners, as well as the constant hassle you are likely to get without a local carer.

We do not think this is worth the few pounds you will save each day.

Some tourists enjoy the experience of being hassled by bumsters, each to their own. Some have the knack of just not getting bothered, but do be aware of the subtle but costly scams that can await you.
