Building
It has been one of the long term objectives of GTS to promote proper employment for Gambians. These plans have had to mould to the situation we find ourselves in with our former partner Lamin K Ceesay. So instead of Brufut the location of our first visitor centre is Kololi and it will have the added advantage of offering members and non members an excellent venue for drinks and food. The menu uses all local produce and members will have the opportunity to join the market tour to purchase the food and even help with the preparation. Email comments to |
Archive Page When GTS was asked to run Dardeema - it was an illegal business with no paper work, no planning permission, it was run down in every sense.. Dardeema meant 'Nice Price' and GTS took it over because the family running had no capital for the rent let alone the fixtures and fittings needed for a restaurant.
Dardeema is shown here before the refurbishment. During August we had a special evening meal to celebrate the progress of the paperwork as far as the offices of the Tourist Development Area. Dardeema under GTS served the very best food for the local Gambian demand as well as establishing a name for a delicious menu aimed at the tourist tastes but with an African flare and of course, the opportunity to have tasters of real Gambian cookery. GTS service made this a venue where your enjoyment was our main objective and members prices were the most competetive in Senegambia. The GTS office was an integral part of the building and we displayed local art and artifacts from a wide range of locations in Gambia, with the option to visit and meet the artists during your stay. It was not a total surprise, that we discovered - after the refurbishment was complete - that our agreement and assurances for a 3 year rental, was as good as non existant. The family wanted the place back now that GTS had sorted out all the paperwork, permits and permissions as well as extensive building work. So if you want to enjoy the same good food, a brilliant atmosphere and help provide education and jobs, just by eating and drinking with us - THEN visit our new bar and restaurant behind Dardeema's. GTS employs around 20 Gambians** and provides the support to sponsor over 150 children's education as well as involving itself in building and refurbishing schools and arranging working holidays to provide support in local schools. ** Sadly for the first time ever GTS has had to lay off some staff - partly because of low tourist numbers but mainly because of a services problem that has meant us running our generator all the time since May. 5 Top
