This project is refreshing as it is quite unlike any other GTS project. Infact it is quite against our fundamental principle that projects should be sustainable and not rely on charity handouts without developing a financial means of continued support. Comments to GTS |
Our fear with Lambai school was that despite the sponsoring of many childrem there the head Lamin Sammateh was having to spend his time trying to raise money rather than raising standards. During a visit by Father Kenny in Oct/November he was fairly insistent that the school be made free, only uniforms would have to be provided by the parents the rest would be funded from contributions from the people of Dumbarton and particulary the congregation of St Augustines church, Dumbarton. Kaberiou took this project on and under his supervision the local Alcalo was involved with the member of the Gambian Assembly, Halifa Sallie along with the village elders of the 'London Corner' district of Serekunda. The newspapers reported the meeting that was held to make the public announcement and again when school resources from Dumbarton were handed over to the school. The school will now be run by a school committee, who will oversee the school's new bank account, boosted with 2000 Dalasi, donated by Hallifa Sallie himself. The committee has a representative from GTS, the parents the local community and the head master to monitor and supervise the school as it develops. GTS wishes the school every success and will be monitoring its progress over the coming months and years. The Feeding programme starts at Lambai, when Linda Kerr, visited from Dumbarton February she was able to take the decisions on the admin of the school and as well as agreeing the setting up of a Lambai bank account, she took photos & reported back on the daily feeding programme. This was reported in the St Augustines Parish Newsletter as follows: Link to Page 5 Top
